Double Tennis Success for Neston!

Both Mens and Ladies win the Wirral League

Trophy

The ladies won the Wirral Ladies Tennis league for only the second time in its long history, the last time being in 2012.

10 different players appeared across the 6 matches and everybody contributed points which was very important as the league was won by only one set concluded by an exciting winning tie break in the very last rubber by Jenny Strong and Sam Adams.

It was a truly great overall team effort throughout the season.

Particularly mention should go to Kathy Clifford, captain, for organising the team and filing in for a late cry off straight after a roast dinner, Sam Adams who played the most matches and gained the most points and Elizabeth Hyatt who only dropped 2 sets across 4 matches. A very special mention should go to Issy Nicol who was in the middle of her tea when Kathy rang her, having had a very late cry off, to ask her to play against Wallasey, our main rivals. It was vital to get somebody to play so we weren’t penalised. In the event Issy and Kathy won one event, 2 sets. Had the result gone the other way Wallasey would have won the league!

The men’s team won the Wirral Men’s League for the first time but without the drama of the ladies success. In fact the league was guaranteed with 2 matches to go, despite the loss of 6 points for an admin error!

Special mention should go to Luke Kirby who organised the team, and didn’t drop any sets in the 3 matches he played, Mike Wake who played the most matches (10) and gained the most points (100), Ieuan Hughes who only dropped 1 set in 7 matches and Elliot Sutton who didn’t drop any in 5!
