Juliet Fearnley
June 1957- August 2025
Juliet Fearnley passed away in Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, Liverpool on Thursday 7 August 2025. She had been fighting her CLL cancer diagnosis for a number of years, yet she remained positive throughout and was determined that it would not beat her. Juliet continued to stay active until she had to be admitted for, an almost, three months stay in hospital. She had recently been playing tennis in the Wirral Mixed League and with her regular “Saga Louts” Wednesday sessions and in fact, was playing third team tennis only the week before she went into hospital!
Juliet joined Neston Hockey Club in the early 1990s. She had previously played for Moorlands Hockey Club and represented Somerset Ladies County and the West of England, before moving North, to be closer to Nic, where she played for Ormskirk Hockey Club in the North Premier League and represented Cheshire Ladies County and North of England. When the children, Sarah and Emma, arrived and after a talk with Emma Poole (daughter of Geoff) with whom she had played at Ormskirk, Juliet joined Neston and very quickly played in the first team in the Cheshire League. She would terrorise many a defence with her pace skill and uncompromising style of play!
One of the highlights of Juliet’s playing career at Neston was the much talked about “Veterans” Dublin Tour where she took her skills to Ireland and returned with a glass trophy for “Player of the Tournament”. As Sarah and Emma became more actively involved with playing hockey, Juliet moved down the teams to help them develop, eventually playing with Sarah in the first team before returning to the third team to help Emma.
When her hockey playing days came to an end, Juliet continued to support the Sarah and Emma and could regularly be heard, home and away, giving encouragement to the girls from the balcony or the touchline and cheering the them on!! Juliet continued to be an active member of the Club and took up tennis playing with her usual competitive and aggressive game and representing the Club mainly at second and third team level. Juliet has been an active member of The Neston Club for over 30 years, where she was a popular with and well-respected by all. Her presence around the club will be sorely missed.
A Memorial Celebration Service for Juliet will take place at 12:00pm on Friday, 29th August 2025 at Christ Church Willaston, Neston Road, Willaston, CH64 2TL. A private cremation for close family will be held prior to the service.
