David Jellicoe & Brian Ennion
David Jellicoe joined Neston Club in 1946 and was a member since he was 10 years of age. Which makes him one of the longest members, 78 years, along with his classmate at Caldy Grammar School, Brian Ennion, who also recently passed away
David was born in Parkgate at Parkgate Cottage, Little Lane and lived there until 2013, when he moved to Hamilton Court, Neston.
He played in the Neston Cricket 1st XI in the 1950’s and 1960’s! He then went on to help form the Neston Hockey section. He was the first 1st XI Hockey Captain for six years.
He was co founder of the Hockey section back in 1963 and was involved with its development over the first few decades with Peter Cross and Geoff Poole. He also worked closely with Geoff Poole coaching the Junior Hockey and the first Beavers and Badgers teams along side, Tony Brooker, David Champion, Roy Rodger, Geoff Morris, David Tweedie and others. The junior hockey proving to be such a good provider of future players, as the 1st team of both men’s and ladies side today prove.
I can say without doubt Neston Hockey would never have got off the ground without his enthusiasm and organisation. We have a copy of his hockey selection records dating back to the very first match, the first scorer was Ben Jackson!
He was the first Ground Secretary working closely with the ground staff and also was involved with the application and securing of Lottery funding for the Club in its first few years.
He was a Maritime underwriter insuring cargo from an office in Dale Street, Liverpool after spending time in National Service with the RAF.
He retired in the 1990’s and spent his time following England cricket tours around the world, in Australia, South Africa, the Caribbean and New Zealand. He spent his last few years within a few hundred yards of The Neston Club.
He leaves a niece Helen who would be very delighted to see members at the funeral and wake on Tuesday 21 January.
